Orthotic Therapy

Orthotics are specially designed devices that fit inside shoes to help control abnormal foot function and alleviate pain in specific areas of the foot. Professionally crafted custom foot orthotics can improve impaired foot function by controlling unusual movement across the joints. These devices are effective in reducing foot pain.

In addition to alleviating pain, custom orthotics can prevent future foot issues, enhance athletic performance by improving alignment, and even assist in the treatment of related issues in the knees, hips, and lower back. Regular follow-ups with a healthcare provider can help ensure the orthotics are functioning as needed and can be adjusted as the individual's foot health evolves.

Gait Way Podiatry make all custom orthotics in-house

Functional foot orthotics are made from various materials ranging from rigid materials, such as plastics and carbon-fibre composites to softer materials such as EVA. Orthotics have a variable lifespan, depending on the required activity. Additions such as top covers and extensions require routine replacement.

Certain patients may not tolerate rigid functional orthotics. Under these circumstances, the podiatrist will prescribe an orthotic made from softer materials with special accommodations for painful areas, such as corns and calluses. Many different materials can be utilized, such as rubber, cork, leather, and soft synthetic plastics.

Custom orthotics that are prescribed by the podiatrist are made for your feet. Over the counter orthotics are made to a standard mould and do not fit the contours of your feet. Over the counter orthotics may help the occasional patient with minor arch discomfort, but they frequently fail because they do not properly control foot function.

The consumer should be aware of individuals with no or inadequate training. Unfortunately, orthotics can be as useful as they are dangerous. Orthotics should be prescribed and fitted by a qualified Podiatrist.

Supportive Footwear

Not all shoes will accommodate an orthotic. Shoes with a shallow heel counter (the rear part of the shoe that wraps around the heel) may pose to be difficult. There are orthotic friendly shoes constructed to accommodate orthotics which will have a removal foot bed to create space for a functional orthotic

Orthic Options

There are many types of orthotics for various activities. Generally it is the most cost effective option to have an all purpose orthotic. This is not always possible as it is dependent on the activity and footwear.
